Dental implants are used when there is no other way to reconstruct a dental piece. An extraction is needed or when the patient has lost one or multiple teeth. In dentistry, there are various types of a dental implant. These are some of them:
- Endosteal implants or osteointegration. In this case, they are surgically installed directly to the jaw.
Once the surrounding tissue has been healed, a second surgery is required to connect the original implant to the pillar.
Finally, the artificial teeth are placed on the pillars. Sometimes the teeth will be places as individuals, or they will be grouped in a prosthesis.
Osteointegrated implants could be laminated, cylindric or screw shape. It is important to mention that they can be made of titanium, zirconium or porcelain. The pillars fixed to the frame juts out through the gums. In the same way as the osseointegrated implants, the artificial teeth are positioned in these pillars.

As in any medical procedure, there might be some risks.
- Implant rejection. In this case, the risk is minimal, but it could happen in very rare cases. What could happen is that the implant could get loose or fall. If the wound does not present problems in the next two to three weeks after the implantation, it is most probably that no risk will be shown.
- This risk is more frequent than the above mentioned. For this reason, we recommend you use sterilised utensils plus take any anti-inflammatory drugs as well as antibiotics.
- Nerv injury. This could happen if the dentist places a wrong size implant. In this case, its symptoms could be pain, teeth, lips, gums and cheeks numbness. For this reason, the professional’s experience is essential when undertaking a dental implant treatment.
